Goals from Luis Moran, David Barral and Diego Castro guided Manolo Preciado’s men to their biggest scalp of the season so far, although they had to survive a late scare when Juan Mata set up a frantic finish with a strike in the dying moments, adding to David Villa’s earlier penalty for Los Che.
Mohammed Tchite gave Santander the lead, which was cancelled out by David Villa’s penalty. Back came Racing, Tchite netting his second of the game, only for Joaquin to fire the hosts level from a corner. But the visitors kept on pressing, and Tchite completed his hat-trick with a header before Albelda’s own goal sealed the away win.
Fernando Morientes scored the visitor’s first goal in the 11th minute before the Spanish league leaders doubled its tally 10 minutes later through Vicente. Portugalete, the only fourth-tier team remaining in the last 32 of the competition, reduced the deficit in the 47th through Urko Vera’s header. Five minutes later, Morientes shot Valencia’s third goal from Vicente’s pass, Nikola Zigic sealed the win when he fired home in the 84th.
Recre scored with their first attack of the second half, Guerrero cut in from the left and teed up Camunas who scored off the near post. David Villa levelled for Valencia after a back post cross from Joaquin.
Two goals from David Villa sandwiched strikes from Juan Mata and Vicente Rodríguez as Numancia slipped to the bottom of the division, while Valencia went top.
Depor took an early lead when Moretti turned a cross into his own net. Juan Mata levelled in the 35th minute, heading home inside the far post. Valencia went ahead just after the break as a neat pass by Mata found Villa, who turned two markers inside the area to beat Aranzubia from close range. Joaquin made it 3-1 on 69 minutes, before Villa bagged his second from a Mata cross. Lafita snatched a consolation goal for the visitors with five minutes to go.
Almeria led at the break, through Pablo Piatti and Alvaro Negredo, but Emery’s men again served notice that they will be a greater threat this year than last by hitting back through Alexis and David Villa.
Valencia got their season off to a flying start with a 3-0 win over Real Mallorca at the Estadio Mestalla. Goals from David Villa, Juan Manuel Mata and Vicente Rodriguez saw Los Che eventually run out comfortable winners against the Islanders.

But, van Nistelrooy looked to have ruined Madrid’s chances of winning the tie when he was sent-off for a second bookable offence with a bad tackle on Baraja. Amazingly the nine men then took the lead through Sergio Ramos, before two goals in three minutes sealed the win. Ruben de la Red hit the third with a great long-range strike and then Higuain hit the fourth with an easy tap in after a poor back pass. Morientes pulled one back but Real won the two-legged Spanish curtain raiser with a famous late comeback with just nine men.
