Spain’s Dani Pedrosa took advantage of a Casey Stoner crash on the warm-up lap to win the Valencia Grand Prix, his second victory of the season securing third place in the MotoGP world championship. Ducati rider Stoner was due to start on pole and was bidding for a third straight win in the final race of the year but was unable to make the start after he flipped high into the air off the bike on the warm-up lap. Pedrosa led the charge from the front row and never relinquished the lead. The victory at his home race lifted the Honda pilot above the Australian to third in the standings behind compatriot Jorge Lorenzo and champion Valentino Rossi.

Valentino Rossi sealed his second successive MotoGP world championship after finishing third at the Malaysian Grand Prix. The championship was Rossi’s fourth for Yamaha, his seventh premier class world title and his ninth overall. Ducati rider Casey Stoner made light of wet conditions at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, snatching the lead from Dani Pedrosa on the first lap and then powering away from the Spaniard.

Stoner, who missed three races with fatigue before posting a podium finish at the Portuguese Grand Prix this month, took the tactical battle by 1.935 seconds over champion Rossi in sunny conditions at the 4.45km Phillip Island circuit.

Jorge Lorenzo briefly lost first place from pole in the Portuguese MotoGP before claiming a peerless victory to reduce the gap on World Championship leader Valentino Rossi to 18 points. Rossi, Fiat Yamaha team-mate of Lorenzo, trailed home in fourth adrift of the leading trio, while returning Casey Stoner finished second ahead of Dani Pedrosa. Pedrosa was quick off the line, moving into top spot from fourth on the grid while Loris Capirossi made up a place to slot in behind Stoner, Rossi and Colin Edwards. Nicky Hayden had gained two to settle behind the Rizla Suzuki rider.

After falling from the lead at the last two races, Jorge Lorenzo kept his Fiat Yamaha on two wheels while Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi crashed around him to win the Indianapolis MotoGP. Pedrosa, whose total domination of the Indy weekend was narrowly broken by Alex de Angelis in morning warm-up, bolted from pole and was sitting a few tenths clear of Rossi and Lorenzo when the front of his Repsol Honda folded on entry to the tight final turn at the end of lap four of 28.

The 23-year-old, who won the 250cc race at the same venue two years ago, finished ahead of Yamaha Tech3 rider Colin Edwards of the US and Honda’s Randy De Puniet of France to secure his first MotoGP win.

Italian Rossi, the five-times Moto GP world champion, extends his lead in the standings to nine points after finishing ahead of his closest rival, Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo. Spaniard Lorenzo, who took pole position despite crashing and partially dislocating his collar bone in qualifying on Saturday, bravely pushed Rossi hard but had to settle for third.
