Cristiano Ronaldo blasted United in front with a free-kick that deceived Sorensen in the fourth minute. With half-time approaching, Park lifted a shot just over the bar, but United doubled their lead just before the whistle as Michael Carrick fired home a fine left-footed strike. United killed the game three minutes into the second half when the ball was fed into Dimitar Berbatov at the near post, and the Bulgarian was allowed to turn and score. Young Danny Welbeck came off the bench and scored the goal of the game with a crashing 25-yard belter. Ronaldo added a fifth with his second converted free-kick of the match at the death.

It took a Carlos Tevez penalty 14 minutes from time for United to see off Rangers.

Wayne Rooney missed a great chance in the opening stages as Manchester United appeared to have the upper hand at the Emirates, but the Gunners picked up their game after 20 minutes with Samir Nasri hitting a half-volley that deflected off Gary Neville, giving van der Sar no chance. Immediately after the restart the Gunners doubled their lead when Samir Nasri produced another fine finish after Fabregas had played him in. Brazilian right back Rafael pulled one back for United in the final minute with a great left-footed volley, but United couldn’t find an equaliser in six minutes of injury-time.

Cristiano Ronaldo saw his early free-kick rise just over the bar, but the mood at Parkhead erupted in the 13th minute as Scott McDonald produced a brilliant finish to lob stand-in United keeper Ben Foster. United cranked up the pressure after the break, Vidic sent a header off target. And after dominating the play for the majority of the second half, United were finally rewarded when Ryan Giggs bundled home a header after Boruc had palmed away Ronaldo’s swerving shot.

United quickly made it two, Dimitar Berbatov produce some wonderful skill to keep the ball in on the touchline, before teeing up Ronaldo for an easy second.

After dominating the early exchanges, United took the lead just after the twenty minute mark when Darren Fletcher was played in by Giggs and finished well with his left foot. Minutes later Howard saved well from a Ronaldo shot. Everton came out battling in the second half and got their reward just after the hour when Marouane Fellaini rose highest to a Phil Neville cross. Almost immediately Everton could have taken the lead when Yakubu pounced on Ferdinand’s weak back pass but his effort was pushed on to the post by Van der Sar.

Manchester United eased to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Celtic at Old Trafford to remain top of Champions League Group E. Dimitar Berbatov put United ahead on the half-hour mark and doubled their lead on 50 minutes, before Wayne Rooney sealed victory with a fine strike late on to keep the defending champions on course for the knock-out phase. Celtic were left to rue two poor decisions by the officials, who should have disallowed both Berbatov goals for offside, but ultimately offered little in the way of an attacking threat and were comprehensively outclassed.

The Baggies were the beneficiaries of a lenient decision chalking off a Wayne Rooney goal for a nudge on Olsson. Early in the second half Wayne Rooney gave United the lead, racing down the inside left channel, cutting inside past Donk, and wrongfooting Carson with a hard, low effort into the bottom-left corner. The floodgates were then opened, Rooney slid a ball to Ronaldo, who shot past Carson for the second. And it was soon third, Nani’s cross evaded everyone and Dimitar Berbatov had the simple job of prodding home his first league goal for his new employers. And as the clock ticked down United found a fourth on the counter-attack, Rooney squared for Nani to tuck home at the back post.

United started brightly, Fletcher dragging a shot wide after 20 minutes. Jason Brown (who is a dead-ringer for a young John Barnes) made a fantastic save to tip over Giggs’ shot, but from the immediate corner Brown looked like he was impeded by Vidic and Wes Brown turned home a back post header to give United the lead. After the break United scored a goal straight out of the top draw, Brown fed Ronaldo down the right, the Portuguese skinned Olsson, and his cutback was perfectly slotted home by Wayne Rooney (who had checked his run). United then chased a third playing Rovers off the park, but a combination of good goalkeeping from Brown and bad luck (Tevez hit the post late on) kept the score at just 2-0.
