15/11/2008: Bolton-Liverpool 0-2 (Premier League)

Scritto da: admin, il 15 November 2008, 9:09 pm

Liverpool had a lot of possession early doors at the Reebok, just after the twenty minute mark Kuyt hit the bar and then minutes later Dirk Kuyt did put the Reds in front, heading home an Aurelio cross. In injury-time of the first-half, Gary Cahill thought he had equalised but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Reina by Nolan. Bolton showed a lot more fight in the second period and substitute Ricardo Gardner was unlucky to scuff his shot after rounding Reina Fernando Torres, on as a substitute, provided the killer second with just under twenty minutes remaining, El Nino played in a delightful cross with the outside of his right foot for Steven Gerrard who planted his header into the bottom corner. In the final minutes, Torres hit the post when well placed.

12/11/2008: Tottenham-Liverpool 4-2 (Curling Cup)

Scritto da: admin, il 13 November 2008, 12:39 am

After a quiet opening, Tottenham dominated themselves on proceedings when Frazier Campbell broke down the left and his cross was clinically dispatched by Roman Pavlyuchenko. Horrible defending then allowed Spurs to double their lead, Cavalieri’s indecision was exploited by Fazier Campbell who rolled in the second. And just three minutes later, on the stroke of halftime, Campbell made it 3-nil with a header from Lennon’s cross. Liverpool pulled a goal back straight after the restart as Gomes lost his bearings from Babel’s cross and Damien Plessis headed home. But Spurs restored their three goal buffer when Zokora’s run and cross was turned home by Pavlyuchenko. Gomes was then at fault again from another Babel corner, the keeper left grabbing at thin air while Sami Hyypia pulled another goal back. The Reds pressed but failed to add any more goals, leaving the defending champions to progress and record their second victory over Liverpool in recent weeks.

08/11/2008: Liverpool-West Brom Albion 3-0 (Premier League)

Scritto da: admin, il 9 November 2008, 1:33 am

Gerrard played in Yossi Benayoun in a goal-scoring position, but Scott Carson came to the Baggies rescue although the ball hit Jonas Olsson’s arm on the rebound. In the 34th minute Liverpool scored, a wonderful pass from Steven Gerrard played in Robbie Keane in the inside left position, and the Irishman broke his Premier League duck for the Reds with a class finish past Carson. And Keane was quick to chalk up his second, Aurelio released the forward from a swift counter-attack, and after beating Carson in no-mans land Keane tucked in number two. In injury time Liverpool got the third, Mascherano poked the ball to Kuyt, who slipped Arbeloa and the full-back cuts inside from the right and curls a beauty into the top-left corner.

04/11/2008: Liverpool-Atletico Madrid 1-1 (Champions League)

Scritto da: admin, il 5 November 2008, 1:00 am

Liverpool started brightly against Atletico, coming close to scoring after Xabi Alonso’s 60-yard pass was perfectly collected by Robbie Keane before seeing his shot go narrowly wide. But it was the Spaniards who took the lead at Anfield, Antonio Lopez controlled a pass brilliantly down the line, and his cross was converted by Maxi Rodriguez. After the break Daniel Agger came close to restoring parity for the Reds but his header beat Atletico keeper Leo Franco but also the bar. Steven Gerrard played a fine one-two with Keane but the skipper’s effort was off target. But just as it looked like Liverpool were going to lose back-to-back games, Steven Gerrard won the Reds a (soft) penalty which he dispatched into the Kop.

01/11/2008: Tottenham-Liverpool 2-1 (Premier League)

Liverpool needed just two and half minutes to beat Gomes at White Hart Lane, Robbie Keane played in Dirk Kuyt and the Dutchman continued his recent form by firing an arrow across the keeper on the angle. Spurs’ best chance of scoring in the first half fell to Luka Modric, but his shot was well saved by Riena. After the break Gerrard struck the post after good work by Kuyt, and Spurs then almost shot themselves in the foot as a terrible pass from Gomes fell behind King, and after Keane robbed the ball into the path of Gerrard, the Reds’ skipper was unfortunate to see his effort come back off the bar. Tottenham made Liverpool pay for their misses, as a Bentley corner was turned into his own net by Jamie Carragher, under pressure from King. And then for the second game running Spurs pulled the rabbit out the hat in injury time, Bentley’s swerving shot was saved by Reina but Bent turned the ball back in the box and Roman Pavlyuchenko scored the winner. Harry Redknapp has now recorded seven points in three games at Spurs to lift the cockerels off the bottom of the table.

26/10/2008: Chelsea-Liverpool 0-1 (Premier League)

Scritto da: admin, il 26 October 2008, 7:46 pm

A bright opening on a gloomy day in London was capped with an early Liverpool goal after 10 minutes, a Terry clearance fell to Xabi Alonso on the edge of the box and the Spaniard’s shot deflected off Bosingwa into the centre of Cech’s goal. Gerrard let rip with a brilliant left-footed half-volley that forced a smart save from Cech. In the second half Alonso was desperately unlucky not to score Liverpool’s second, but his free-kick struck the foot of the post to stay out. Liverpool repelled everything an under-strengthened Chelsea could muster but at the end Chelsea finally lost their unbeaten home record stretching back to February 2004.

22/10/2008: Atletico Madrid-Liverpool 1-1 (Champions League)

Scritto da: admin, il 22 October 2008, 11:13 pm

Liverpool raced to an early lead in Spain, Alonso stole the ball in midfield, Gerrard picked up the play before threading a pass through to Robbie Keane, and the Irishman stepped up and finished expertly. Yossi Benayoun had a goal ruled out for offside early in the second half, but Atletico then picked up their game, and were unlucky to see Simao’s shot come back off the post. Eventually, after upping their game significantly, Atletico drew level, Forlan picked out Simao who finished well past Riena.

18/10/2008: Liverpool-Wigan 3-2 (Premier League)

Scritto da: admin, il 18 October 2008, 6:04 pm

Wigan were the better team early doors at Anfield, Kapo saw a good effort saved by Pepe Reina. And the Latics got their reward when Amr Zaki robbed Agger to place the ball past Reina and put Wigan ahead. Agger made up for his error by setting up Dirk Kuyt for the equaliser. Kuyt then went close to a second, but his long-range shot hit the crossbar - a great save by Kirkland. In injury-time of the first-half, Amr Zaki scored a terrific volley to put Wigan in front again. In the 71st minute, Gerrard stroked a free-kick just past the Wigan post. After Wigan went down to ten men, when Valencia was sent off for two bookable offences, Liverpool did equalise through Albert Riera who capitalised on a dummy by Gerrard. And Dirk Kuyt sent Anfield into delirium when he completed the comeback with minutes remaining, the Dutchman produced a terrific acrobatic volley from a Pennant cross.

05/10/2008: Manchester City-Liverpool 2-3 (Premier League)

Scritto da: admin, il 5 October 2008, 10:04 pm

Dirk Kuyt missed a great chance to give Liverpool the lead after fine work by Riera on the left hand side, and Manchester City soon punished the Reds as Steven Ireland volleyed home a loose ball after slack defending by Arbeloa. Alonso tried his luck from distance, but it was City who scored next, a fabulous curling free-kick from Garrido nestled in the top corner to make it 2-0. After the break Liverpool quickly halved the deficit, Arbeloa crossed in to Torres who scored his third goal in two games. With City looking to reassert themselves Robinho belied his reputation by missing a glorious chance from 3 yards out (offside?). Matters then worsened for City when Pablo Zabaleta was shown a straight red for a horror challenge (studs up) on Xabi Alonso. And Liverpool made their numerical advantage count when Gerrard’s corner was powered home by Torres, who seemed to have the freedom of the box. Torres then managed to miss a sitter from under the bar, but as the game entered six minutes of injury time Liverpool pulled off the comeback of the season, Benayoun cut-back for Torres, his shot was blocked and Dirk Kuyt popped up to net the winner.
