A first-half goal by Fernando Torres gave Spain their first major trophy in 44 years after a 1-0 Euro 2008 final win over Germany. The victory at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria, rounded off a superb tournament for the Spanish, for whom it was a second European triumph in addition to their 1964 win.

The match at the Ernst Happel Stadium was another instalment of the Cesc Fabregas Show, as the Arsenal midfielder came off the bench to set up two of the goals in a virtuoso display in which Xavi, Dani Guiza and David Silva all scored to set up Sunday’s clash against Germany.

Philipp Lahm’s last-minute goal gave Germany a dramatic 3-2 victory over Turkey in their Euro 2008 semi-final at St Jakob-Park in Basel. Turkey had the better of the game throughout and took the lead midway through the first half when Ugur Boral volleyed home, but Bastian Schweinsteiger equalised almost immediately from Lukas Podolski’s left-wing cross. Germany laboured for much of the second period, but went ahead for the first time through Miroslav Klose with 11 minutes to play, and it looked likely to be the winning goal until, with four minutes to play, Semih Senturk diverted Sabri Sarioglu’s right-wing cross into the German net at the near post.

Spain booked their place in the semi-final of Euro 2008 as Iker Casillas emerged as the hero in a dramatic penalty shootout win over Italy. Spot kicks were needed after 120 minutes of normal play in a dour encounter that failed to produce a goal at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. Real Madrid keeper Casillas saved twice - from Daniele De Rossi and Antonio Di Natale - to give substitute Cesc Fabregas the chance to put Spain 4-2 up and into next week’s last-four clash with Russia. And the young Arsenal midfielder - used as a second-half substitute again - made no mistake with his kick.

Germany became the first side to qualify for the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 when they beat Portugal 3-2 at St Jakob-Park in Basel. Bastian Schweinsteiger finished a flowing move to put his side 1-0 up midway through the first half before setting up Miroslav Klose for Germany’s second shortly afterwards, but Portugal cut their lead in half through Nuno Gomes minutes before half-time. Michael Ballack made the most of generous Portuguese defending to increase his side’s lead on the hour mark, before substitute Helder Postiga gave Portugal hope with a late header.

Goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Andrei Arshavin earned Russia a very impressive 2-0 victory over Sweden at the Tivoli Neu Stadium in Innsbruck that secured their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008. Russia played superb passing football throughout, and took a deserved lead through Pavlyuchenko midway through the first half, with the influential Arshavin doubling their advantage after five minutes of the second half following a slick counter-attack.

Once again Spain struck in the closing moments to ensure the victory, Mallorca striker Dani Guiza notching his first international goal after Ruben de la Red had equalised Angelos Charisteas’s opener for Greece.
