The game headed into extra time, but just as it looked like penalties were imminent, Dirk Kuyt relieved the anxiety at Anfield by getting on the end of Ryan Babel’s cross to direct the ball into the net from three yards. It wasn’t pretty but Liverpool are through.

A evitare i rigori ci pensa il solito, impagabile e sempre troppo sottovalutato Kuyt: sua la zampata sul cross di Babel che toglie le castagne dal fuoco al Liverpool di Benitez.

La Fiorentina accede ai gironi del massimo torneo europeo forte dei due gol dell’andata e di una bella prestazione, macchiata solo dagli sprechi nel primo tempo, quando è andata a un passo dal gol con Gilardino, Santana e Felipe. Per il resto grande autorevolezza, e perle di Jovetic nel finale.

Samir Nasri continued his impressive start at the Gunners by giving the lead at half time against FC Twente. Arsenal doubled their advantage after the break, William Gallas was in the right place to score after Bendtner’s shot had been initially saved. Theo Walcott scored a lovely third goal, showing his pace to burst through the Dutch defense before curling home a right foot shot. Bendtner wrapped up the win in the dying stages.

On their return to the Champions League Juve took a seventh minute lead at home to Petrzalka with a goal from Mauro Camoranesi. Alessandro Del Piero scored the second midway through the first period - a brilliant finish into the top right hand corner. Giorgio Chiellini added the third to cap a fine half for Claudio Ranieri’s side Legrottaglie added the fourth in the 90th minute of the match.

Liverpool were fortunate to escape with a 0-0 draw from their Champions League third qualifying round clash with Standard Liege of Belgium. The Premier League side looked well off the pace against the spirited Belgium champions, who missed a first-half penalty and several good chances.

C’è Dossena (ma non l’acciaccato Gerrard) nell’undici iniziale dei Reds, che ospite dello Standard Liegi non va oltre lo 0-0. L’ex udinese è però protagonista in negativo all’11′, quando tocca con le mani in area inducendo l’arbitro a fischiare un rigore. Dal dischetto va Dante, che si fa ipnotizzare da Reina, salvato qualche minuto prima dal palo su una punizione di Fellaini. Gara equilibrata nella ripresa, con chance fallite da Dante per i padroni di casa e da Torres per gli ospiti. Al 67′ Benitez si gioca la carta Gerrard, che subentra a Keane: il capitano suona la carica, ma è lo Standard a sfiorare il gol con De Camargo al 73′. Nel finale ancora Gerrard va vicino al gol su punizione.
