John Heitinga bundled home the opener for Atletico against Depor. Early in the second half Diego Forlan doubled the lead, picking up a loose ball before producing a clinical finish. Maxi found the third with Forlan wrapping up the game in the final stages. Filipe notched a consolation for Depor.
Liverpool started brightly against Atletico, coming close to scoring after Xabi Alonso’s 60-yard pass was perfectly collected by Robbie Keane before seeing his shot go narrowly wide. But it was the Spaniards who took the lead at Anfield, Antonio Lopez controlled a pass brilliantly down the line, and his cross was converted by Maxi Rodriguez. After the break Daniel Agger came close to restoring parity for the Reds but his header beat Atletico keeper Leo Franco but also the bar. Steven Gerrard played a fine one-two with Keane but the skipper’s effort was off target. But just as it looked like Liverpool were going to lose back-to-back games, Steven Gerrard won the Reds a (soft) penalty which he dispatched into the Kop.
Aguero broke the deadlock on 14 minutes following Diego Forlan’s headed pass and the pair combined again on 28 minutes with the Uruguayan supplying Aguero with the chance to score from close range.
Atletico were ahead with sixty seconds, Simao let rip with a beauty into the top corner. Simoa was then responsible for teeing up Forlan for 2-nil at the break. Marcos Senna pulled a goal back for the Yellow Submaraine with a speculative shot that the keeper fumbled, and the score was level when Llorente slipped home the equaliser after good work from Rossi. Pires then set up Rodriguez for the third as Atletico’s defensive feel to pieces, and the game looked over when Rossi completed an amazing 19 minute spell. But back came Atletico, firstly through a fine solo goal from Simao and then through an 85th minute equaliser from Garcia.
Liverpool raced to an early lead in Spain, Alonso stole the ball in midfield, Gerrard picked up the play before threading a pass through to Robbie Keane, and the Irishman stepped up and finished expertly. Yossi Benayoun had a goal ruled out for offside early in the second half, but Atletico then picked up their game, and were unlucky to see Simao’s shot come back off the post. Eventually, after upping their game significantly, Atletico drew level, Forlan picked out Simao who finished well past Riena.
Ruud van Nistelrooy shot Real Madrid into an early lead in the local derby against Atletico. Minutes later Sneijder nearly doubled the lead but his shot hit the bar. The home sides task was then made even harder when Luis Perea was sent off for smacking Sneijder in the face. But, five minutes before the break, goalscorer Ruud van Nistelrooy was also shown the red card for a bad tackle to even things up at 10 men for both teams. In the 90th minute, Atletico equalised when Simao scored with a well struck free-kick. But Atletico’s joy was short-lived as deep in injury-time Drenthe was fouled in the box by Heitinga and Higuain scored the penalty to give Real a barely deserved win.
Barca came flying out the traps against Atletico, scoring an incredible three goals in the first eight minutes. Marquez headed home Xavi’s corner after four minutes, Eto’o added a second from the spot after Messi was fouled in the box, and Messi took a brilliant quick free-kick to complete the astonishing opening with the third. But Atletico hit back immediately, Maxi Rodriguez flashed a stunning 20 yard shot past Valdes to make it 3-1 after just 13 minutes. And it didn’t stop there, Eto’o ran clean through after 17 minutes and slotted home the fourth for Barca. And the madness continued, Iniesta’s shot hit the post and Gudjohnsen was on hand to register the fifth. The second half was a far tighter affair, but Henry came off the bench to fire home a beautiful sixth after slick build-up play.
Sergio Aguero put Atletico one-up at home to Marseille, controlling expertly before slotting home the opener to further add to his growing reputation. The French side hit back just after the quarter-hour, Mamadou Niang heading home at the back post. Minutes later Atletico re-took the lead through Raul Garcia who got the faintest of touches on a free-kick.
