Ryan Briscoe never doubted The Captain’s call. That’s team Penske boss Roger Penske, who came up with a surprising strategy Sunday that Briscoe turned into his second IndyCar Series victory.

Series leader Troy Bayliss got back to winning ways in style as he clinched both races in today’s World Superbikes round at Brno. Bayliss had not had a win since April and had never triumphed at the Czech circuit, but the Ducati rider broke his duck with his 47th career victory in race one and then cemented his place at the top of the World Superbike standings by doing the same in race two. Bayliss beat fellow Australian Troy Corser by 1.5 seconds in the first race of the day and enjoyed victory by even less of a margin in the second as Michel Fabrizio rode across the line less than a second behind him.

Valentino Rossi extended his Moto GP championship lead after a fascinating duel with Casey Stoner saw him claim his maiden victory at the United States MotoGP at Laguna Seca. There had been nothing to choose between the pair until Stoner rode into the gravel with eight laps remaining and although he managed to get back into the race, the Australian could not claw back the gap. However, the duo had built up such a lead that the Ducati of Stoner was still able to finish ahead of Chris Vermeulen in third with Britain’s James Toseland finishing ninth.

Credit Agricole’s Simon Gerrans took victory on a dramatic stage 15 of the Tour de France in Prato Nevoso that saw Frank Schleck (CSC) take the yellow jersey. While the Australian proved too strong for fellow breakaway riders Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel), Danny Pate (Garmin-Chipotle) and Jose Luis Arrieta (Ag2r) on the first-category mountain-top finish, drama unfolded further down the mountain as Schleck and Bernhard Kohl (Gerolsteiner) both moved away from race favourite Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto) to take first and second places on the general classification respectively.

Lewis Hamilton overtook Heikki Kovalainen, Felipe Massa and Nelson Piquet in the closing stages to win a thrilling German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. The British McLaren driver won his second successive race to take sole possession of the lead in the drivers’ championship, four points ahead of Ferrari’s Massa. Renault’s Piquet, operating a one-stop strategy, claimed his first podium finish in Formula One in second, with Massa third and Kimi Raikkonen sixth.
