Kasey Kahne and team director Kenny Francis sat on the podium to answer questions after a dominant performance to win the Pocono 500 on Sunday and promptly were asked whether they doubted themselves and their Gillett Evernham Motorsports team before winning the All-Star race less than a month ago. Apparently not, and Francis backed it up with a rundown of how well they had done this season up until that point. There’s certainly no reason to doubt themselves after two points wins in three weeks — three wins in four counting the cash-only All-Star race — have propelled Kahne from 14th and outside the Chase cutoff up to ninth.
Poland’s Robert Kubica, driving a BMW Sauber, won a drama-filled Canadian Grand Prix in which pre-race favourite Lewis Hamilton took himself and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen out of the race in an early pit lane collision. German Nick Heidfeld, also driving a BMW, claimed second place and Briton David Coulthard of the Red Bull stable finished third. After lap 18 of the 70-lap race, Hamilton ploughed into the back of Raikkonen’s car while he and Kubica were waiting for the red light at the end of the pit lane.
Massa 5°.
With a fabulous start and a frantic finish, the Boston Celtics are two wins away from their 17th NBA championship. The Celtics nearly squandered an outstanding all-around performance, a 24-point lead and control of The NBA Finals before regrouping in the last minute for a 108-102 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 on Sunday night.
A brace from Lukas Podolski gave Germany a 2-0 Euro 2008 Group B opening win against local rivals and the country of his birth, Poland. The Bayern Munich striker moved to Germany as a toddler and his muted celebrations reflected his origins. Fittingly, both goals were set up by Miroslav Klose, his Bayern team-mate and another naturalised German of Polish birth.
Dani Pedrosa took his second MotoGP victory of the 2008 season - and maintained his perfect home Spanish record - by slaughtering his rivals during the Catalan Grand Prix. A classic Pedrosa victory saw the Repsol Honda rider snatch the lead at turn one, then set off like a rocket to build a two second lead over pole sitter Casey Stoner by lap two of 25. Whilst his rivals squabbled, Pedrosa simply disappeared into the distance.
Pedrosa primo, Rossi secondo.
An early penalty from Luka Modric gave Croatia an unconvincing 1-0 European Championships Group B opening win over a plucky Austria side at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. Rene Aufhauser’s clumsy tackle felled Ivica Olic in the third minute, and new Tottenham midfielder Modric calmly slotted the ball past Juergen Mach to score the quickest penalty ever in European Championships history. Austria can take heart despite the defeat, as they outplayed an ordinary Croatia side - the game came in the light of 10,000 of their own fans signing a petition calling for their withdrawal from the tournament to avoid humiliation at the hands of their “superiors”.
Rafael Nadal claimed a historic fourth consecutive French Open title after crushing world number one Roger Federer 6-1 6-3 6-0 in the Roland Garros final. The 22-year-old Spaniard, who did not drop a set the entire tournament, matches Bjorn Borg’s record of four successive Grand Slam crowns in Paris.
