Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt set a new 100 metres world record at the Reebok grand prix in New York, while his compatriot Veronica Campbell-Brown posted the fastest time of the year in the women’s event. The 21-year-old Bolt announced he is a genuine force in track and field’s blue ribband event by streaking home in a time of 9.72 seconds, breaking the previous record of 9.74 posted by compatriot Asafa Powell last September.

For the smallest moment Ryan Briscoe thought it was going to be another one of the bad luck days that have dogged him this season. The 23-year-old Australian was working hard late in Sunday’s IndyCar race at the Milwaukee Mile to hold off Indianapolis 500 winner Scott Dixon and, all of sudden, the track ahead was enveloped in smoke and all he could do was hit the brakes hard and hope.
Valentino Rossi escaped from the pack to claim his magnificent seventh consecutive home Mugello victory in dominant style in Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix. Rossi, riding under bright sunshine and in front of almost 100,000 trackside fans, got a bad start from pole position an was only fourth through the first sequence of corners, behind Dani Pedrosa, Casey Stoner and Loris Capirossi. But The Doctor worked his way clinically forwards, passing Capirossi’s Suzuki on the opening lap and immediately closing the slight gap to his title rivals. Stoner’s powerful Ducati got the better of Pedrosa along the home straight on lap 2 of 23, with Rossi dropping the Repsol Honda rider back to third later on the same lap. The Fiat Yamaha star then took the race lead from Stoner with a clever inside move through a downhill turn and the face painted on the top of Rossi’s special Mugello helmet never looked back.

Carlos Checa capitalised on Troy Bayliss’ problems to reignite the title race with his first career victories in the sixth round of the World Superbikes series in Salt Lake City. The Spaniard, starting on pole for the first time since his move from MotoGP, clinched race one ahead of Troy Corser for his first win since his 1998 triumph in the Madrid Grand Prix, while championship leader Bayliss failed to finish after an early fall. And the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider did not have to wait long for his second triumph, finishing ahead of Germany’s Max Neukirchner in race two, with Italy’s Michel Fabrizio third and Australian Bayliss encountering mechanical problems to fall out of the points at the Miller Motorsports Park.

No matter how bad the race is, and this one was the snoozer of the season, Kyle Busch and his team find a way to win. Busch easily won the Best Buy 400 on Sunday, his fourth Sprint Cup victory of the year, without making a single on-track pass for the lead. Quick work in the pits under green-flag stops put Busch out front in the No. 18 Toyota with 163 laps to go. Except for a brief reshuffling for the last green-flag stops, that’s where he stayed.
