World and Olympic 400 champion LaShawn Merritt teamed up with rival and silver medallist Jeremy Wariner to breeze to victory in the men’s relay with the year’s best time of two minutes and 57.86 seconds. With Angelo Taylor and Kerron Clement also in their formidable line-up, the other teams could only battle for second and third place. Britain (3:00.53) grabbed the silver medal with a determined run by Martyn Rooney, leaving Australia (3:00.90) in third.

Jamaica were crowned men’s 4×100 metres world champions for the first time with Usain Bolt completing a unique sprint grand slam. Jamaica clocked the second-fastest time ever of 37.31 seconds bettered only by their own world record Beijing Olympics time of 37.10 to grab gold ahead of Trinidad & Tobago and Britain who won bronze. Bolt, who ran the third leg, has become the only sprinter ever to hold Olympic and world titles in the 100, 200 and the 4×100 relay while also holding world records in those events.

22/08/2009: Marathon 42km (Athletics - Berlin 2009)

Abel Kirui won the men’s marathon world title in a championship record two hours six minutes and 54 seconds to make it three global titles in a row for Kenya. Compatriot Emmanuel Mutai took silver in 2:07:48 with Tsegay Kebde claiming bronze for Ethiopia (2:08:35). Having spent years winning all sorts of track long distance golds and big city marathons Kenya were mystifyingly short on marathon titles until Luke Kibet won the 2007 world championship and Sammy Wanjiru followed up with Olympic gold last year.

Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt dethroned two-time defending world champion Jeremy Wariner when he strode to an impresive victory in the 400m at the World Athletics Championships here on Friday. The American, who finished second at the Osaka 2007 worlds, clocked a world lead of 44.06 seconds, far off his Beijing Games time of 43.75sec, the fifth fastest time ever. Compatriot Wariner timed a season’s best of 44.60sec for silver with Trinidad’s Renny Quow taking bronze in 45.02sec.
