QPR almost broke the deadlock after 10 minutes when Jay Bothroyd was denied by Wojciech Szczesny in the Arsenal box. At the other end Robin van Persie was trying to unlock to Rangers’ backline single-handedly. Van Persie send a header narrowly wide of the post, before the Dutchman screwed a shot narrowly wide as the Gunners pressed for the opener. Robin van Persie’s misfiring first half continued when he lashed a half-volley over the bar, while the Gunners felt hard-done-by when a handball from Luke Young in the QPR box failed to result in a penalty. Ten minutes after the break Theo Walcott ran through but finished a golden chance terribly. On the hour, Arsenal made the breakthrough as Andrey Arshavin played in Robin van Persie to go within one goal of the calendar year goals tally in the Premier League. Rangers responded but Szczesny saved well from an Adel Taarabt shot.
