Second seed Serena Williams won the Australian Open after destroying third seed Dinara Safina 6-0 6-3 in just 58 minutes in Melbourne. Williams completely dominated the match from the start, allowing Safina only eight points in the first set, and will now take over the world number one spot from Jelena Jankovic when the new rankings are released on Monday. The American completed a non-calendar Grand Slam between 2002-03, which she dubbed the “Serena Slam”, and is now halfway towards repeating that feat after winning the US Open last September.
