Spurs were given a golden opportunity to take the lead when Peter Crouch won a late first half penalty but Rafeal van der Vaart saw his effort brilliantly turned aside by Twente keeper Mihailov. Van der Vaart redeemed himself at the start of the start half slamming home an opener following Huddlestone’s raking pass to Crouch and the beanpole striker’s knock-down to the Dutchman. Spurs went 2-up in the 53rd minute, Bale was scythed down in the box by Rosales and Roman Pavlyuchenko took responsibility from the spot and scored. Twente halved the deficit in the 57th minute, a free-kick cause mayhem in the Lilywhites box and Nacer Chadli stabbed a shot past Gomes. Van der Vaart’s eventful match was brought to an early end when the Dutchman was sent off in the 61st for a second bookable offence but Spurs continued to press and they went 3-1 up when Roman Pavlyuchenko converted his second penalty of the match. Tottenham’s ten men sealed their first ever Champions League win late on as the excellent Gareth Bale tucked a tidy shot into the near post.
