Javier Mascherano was squarely at fault for the Real Madrid opener, finished off by Gonzalo Higuain on 11 minutes. A further 8 minutes later it was 2-0 as Cristiano Ronaldo exploited more hesitancy in the centre of the Barcelona defence to make it 2-0. Just before the half hour the sending off of Adriano made Barcelona’s challenge even greater. Barcelona’s lifeline came on the stroke of half-time as Lionel Messi curled home a glorious free-kick.
