Wolfsburg’s fantastic Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko broke the deadlock just before the interval at Werder with an outstanding solo goal in which he danced around the home defence before firing in the far corner. Bremen, second at the start of play, equalised just after the hour through Hugo Almeida after the Wolves had failed to clear a corner. Edin Dzeko restored the lead five minutes before the end with his second of the contest, only for Werder to grab an equaliser in the closing seconds when Per Mertesacker popped up with a goal to send them above Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.
