Avram Grant’s start to life as the new Pompey manager started badly as, after the hosts had peppered the United goal early doors, Wayne Rooney slotted home a 25th minute penalty to fire Fergie’s boys into the lead. The South Coasters though won their own (soft?) penalty on the half hour for a push in the box and Kevin Prince Boateng dusted off the memories of Stoke to slot in the equaliser. United regained the lead early in second half when Fletcher picked out Giggs over the top who in turn fed Wayne Rooney for his brace. Giggs, 36 on Sunday, then won United’s second penalty of the game to allow Wayne Rooney to claim his hat-trick. Ryan Giggs capped a wonderful performance by netting his 100th Premier League goal with a sweetly struck free-kick.
