The Carling Cup final got off to a blistering start, James Milner put Villa in front from the penalty spot after Vidic had fouled Agbonlahor after only four minutes. United responded nine minutes later, Michael Owen placing the ball into the corner for the equaliser. Midway through the second half United took the lead as the deadly partnership of Antonio Valencia’s crosses from the left and Wayne Rooney’s heading ability saw the England striker loop an effort over Friedel and into the net.
