Yamaha’s Ben Spies celebrated his first MotoGP win at the Dutch TT in Assen after his world champion team mate Jorge Lorenzo and Honda’s pole sitter Marco Simoncelli collided on the first lap. The American, starting in second place in damp conditions, was the first new winner in MotoGP since Italian Andrea Dovizioso in 2009. The Yamaha rider was never really threatened after Lorenzo and Simoncelli had both gone to ground on the third bend of the opening lap. Lorenzo was blameless for the collision, but he recovered well to finish in sixth place with Simoncelli ending in ninth spot. Championship leader Casey Stoner finished second for Honda to open up a lead of 28 points over Lorenzo, who remains second in the standings despite his trials and tribulations.
