Schalke had an early penalty appeal turned down when Afellay appeared to be brought down by Vito Mannone. With 14 minutes to go a lacklustre Arsenal performance got worse when Klaas Jan Huntelaar fired Schalke in front. With 4 minutes to go Ibrahim Afellay made it 2-0 at the back post after a flowing move.
