When the action started Ryan Giggs fizzed a shot just wide of the upright, while at the other end Steven Gerrard just missed the target from a training ground corner routine. Liverpool were in control for most of the first half, but in the 39th minute the Reds had Jonjo Shelvey sent off for an x-rated tackle on Evans. (Shelvey had words with Sir Alex Ferguson as he left the pitch.) Less than 90 seconds into the second half Liverpool took the lead as Steven Gerrard cracked home a volley in front of the Kop. Manchester United weren’t behind for long as in the 51st minute Rafael proved the unlikely leveller with a clinical left-footed strike. In the 57th minute Luis Suarez was denied a penalty shout after Evans touched him in the box. The Red Devils won a debatable penalty in the 75th minute when Valencia fell under Johnson’s challenge, and Robin van Persie scored United’s first penalty in four attempts.
