Stoke nearly took the lead early on when Jonathan Walters struck the crossbar with glancing header. Juan Mata played a beautiful ‘sand-wedge’ pass over the top for Torres who fluffed the chance after being well closed down by the Stoke keeper. Ashley Cole broke the deadlock 5 minutes from the end of normal time.
