AC Milan’s woeful start to the season worsen early doors at home to FC Zurich as centre-half Hannu Tihinen scored with a Zola-esque flick from a corner to hand the Swiss minnows the advantage.

Juventus will be the happier of the two sides after emerging with a point despite a dominant Bayern performance in the first period, with Franck Ribery pulling the strings and carving out the hosts’ best chances from the midfield.

United were forced to substitute an injured Michael Owen after 20 minutes; Dimitar Berbatov came off the bench and looked to make a difference, although Wolfsburg also looked dangerous in attack. Old Trafford fell silence ten minutes into the second half, Hasebe lofted a lovely left-footed ball to the far post where Bosnian star Edin Dzeko (offside?) beat Evra to crash home a header. But United were soon level as Ryan Giggs saw his free-kick deflect wickedly off the wall to end up in the net. With 13 minutes remaining United moved ahead, Rooney, Berbatov and Giggs were all involved before Michael Carrick bent the ball into the top left corner.

After a goalless first half at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid took contol of the game with OM on the hour mark. Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock befitting from a mistake from French keeper Mandanda with a cheeky low finish, and CR9 was then brought down in the box by former Charlton man Souleymane Diawara (fair challenge?), with Kaka scoring from the spot as Marseille were reduced to 10-men. Marseille were then opened up for the third time in five minutes as Cristiano Ronaldo tapped in the third.

Teenager Steven Jovetic is rapidly becoming one of the hottest properties in European football. The Viola forward broke free of the square Liverpool back four and coolly fired home past Pepe Riena. In the 37th minute Jovetic struck again, the Reds failed to clear their lines under pressure and the young Montenegrin met Vargas’s fiercely hit cross to fire Fiorentina into a 2-goal lead.

The Russian champions had a wonderful opening against Inter, Alekhandro Dominges raced through the heart of the Inter backline and produced a wonderful finish to boot after 11 minutes. Mourinho’s men drew level just before the half hour as Maicon delivered a fine cross to the back post where Dejan Stankovic was stationed to head in the equaliser. Mario Balotelli crippled Inter’s hopes by getting himself needlessly sent off on the hour, but the Russians disappointingly failed to capitalise on their advantage.
