It took Bayern just 11 minutes to score, Thomas Muller finished off a clinical attack which rip the Milan defence wide open. The game then mellowed until the final 15 minutes, Bastien Schweinsteiger dancing his way through the Italian backline to score. Andrea Pirlo crashed home a terrific free-kick to bring Milan back in the match, but late strikes from Saer Sene and Muller again sealed a victory for the Germans.

Juventus breezed past their Korean opponents with goals from Vincenzo Iaquinta, Diego on debut (a wonderful skill finish) and a Nicola Legrottaglie header.

But the seesaw competition between Target Ganassi Racing’s Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon continued, Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe dropped only one point despite brushing a wall and his teammate Helio Castroneves maintained his slim championship hopes.

Jimmie Johnson became the first driver to win back-to-back races at the Brickyard when a speeding penalty knocked Juan Montoya out of contention. Montoya led 116 laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and had a 5-second lead over the competition when NASCAR flagged him for speeding as he entered pit road with 35 laps left in Sunday’s race. Montoya furiously denied driving too fast even swearing on his wife and two children that NASCAR made a mistake but the penalty dropped him to 12th and put the race up for grabs. Mark Martin restarted as the leader with 24 laps left, but Hendrick Motorsports teammate Johnson sailed past him for his third win in four years at Indy.

Astana’s Alberto Contador claimed his second yellow jersey at the Tour de France as Mark Cavendish became the first Briton to win the final stage on the Champs-Elysees. Cavendish, riding for Columbia-HTC, underlined his status as the fastest sprinter in the world by streaking away from his rivals to win by a huge margin. Contador finished 4′19″ ahead of Saxo Bank’s Andy Schleck in the overall standings, with Contador’s team-mate Lance Armstrong taking the final place on the podium on his return to cycling following three years away from the sport.

Italian rider Andrea Dovizioso won the British MotoGP at Donnington Park on the race’s farewell appearance at the track. The 23-year-old, who won the 250cc race at the same venue two years ago, finished ahead of Yamaha Tech3 rider Colin Edwards of the US and Honda’s Randy De Puniet of France to secure his first MotoGP win.

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix as McLaren roared back to the front after a slump of 10 races without success. Kimi Raikkonen, driving the only Ferrari in the race after Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa suffered a serious head injury in qualifying, was second in a return to what seemed like a vanished order after nine races dominated by Brawn and Red Bull.

Ben Spies resisted a late charge by Max Biaggi to win race two at Brno and head into the summer break just seven points adrift of championship leader Noriyuki Haga. Spies led to the chequered flag from the second turn, but not before a breathtaking final few laps as he and Biaggi disputed the lead, the American putting on a display of precision riding to not allow his rival an opportunity to pass. Going a long way to making up for his retirement in race one at the hands of Michel Fabrizio, Spies is now just a handful of points behind Noriyuki Haga. Even so, the margin could have been smaller but for Haga’s outstanding determination to finish in sixth position.

Max Biaggi ha trionfato a Brno riportando l’Aprilia al successo nel Mondiale Superbike 8 anni dopo Imola 2001 con Règis Laconi. La marca di Noale, rientrata quest’anno, ha dominato con la RSV4 dopo appena 10 Gp di rodaggio.
