Jerry Sloan was annoyed when the Utah Jazz blew a huge lead Saturday and had to come from behind to win a game they had all but clinched. When the Jazz did the same thing in a 112-104 win over the New York Knicks on Monday night, the Utah coach went from irked to concerned. Utah led by 24 early in the fourth quarter, but for the second game in a row watched a big lead slowly erode into a deficit. Deron Williams had 24 points and 13 assists and Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Jazz, who are becoming consistent in some very bad ways. Utah led Phoenix by 21 on Saturday, then needed to rally to beat the Suns in overtime.

Just seconds after coming on as a substitute Julio Baptista put Brazil in front but in the 89th minute the home side scored a deserved equaliser through Cristian Noboa after great wing play from Edison Mendez.

The New Jersey Nets certainly didn’t look like a team fighting for its playoff life. Facing one of the worst teams in the league that was missing its two best players, the Nets started flat on offense and appeared wholly uninterested on the defensive side of the ball in a loss that may have sunk them into too big a hole. Playing more aggressively than he has in months, Mike Miller had 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to help the Minnesota Timberwolves snap a seven-game losing streak with a 108-99 victory over the fading Nets on Sunday. Ryan Gomes scored 21 and Kevin Love added 16 points and 11 boards for the Timberwolves, who had lost 18 of their last 20 games.

Jimmie Johnson nudged Denny Hamlin aside in the third and fourth turns with 15 laps to go and gave team owner Rick Hendrick a perfect place to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his first victory in NASCAR’s premier series: Victory Lane. Johnson, dubbed “Mr. Martinsville” by Jeff Gordon, lived up to his moniker, winning for the fifth time in the last six races on the smallest, trickiest track in the series. It was his sixth victory at the 0.526-mile oval, second only to Gordon’s seven among active drivers. Hamlin, the defending race champion, never challenged Johnson after he slid high into the banking after the bump and pass, and his winless streak extended to 32 races. Hamlin finished second, followed by Tony Stewart, Gordon and Clint Bowyer.

Britain’s Jenson Button produced a flawless display to win the Australian Grand Prix on the Brawn team’s Formula One debut. Button left team boss Ross Brawn after leading an an astonishing one-two ahead of Brazilian veteran Rubens Barrichello. The 29-year-old, written off as on overpaid has-been after two dismal seasons with Honda, made it look like a walk in the park while his two closest rivals drove each other off the track in the twilight. Barrichello started and finished second but only after Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and BMW-Sauber’s Robert Kubica collided three laps from the end while second and third respectively.

Fuori nel finale per un contatto, quando erano da podio, Vettel e Kubica. Delusione Ferrari: ritiro per Massa e Raikkonen. Il pilota Toyota è stato retrocesso per aver sorpassato con le bandiere gialle esposte Hamilton, che diventa 3°.

Midway through the first-half Lionel Messi opened the scoring before second-half goals from Carlos Tevez, Maxi Rodriguez and Sergio “Kun” Aguero secured Diego Maradona’s first competitive victory as Argentina manager.

Portugal were the better team but continue their poor start to World Cup qualification under Carlos Queiroz and with Denmark and Hungary winning they may not make South Africa.
