With Robbie Keane making his debut, Liverpool’s best chance of the half fell to fellow new-boy David Ngog following Yossi Benayoun’s clever run and pass but the Frenchman’s snapshot was weak and easily gathered. The Yellow Submarine went close to breaking the deadlock as Ariel Ibagaza struck the post, before Liverpool’s Stephen Darby got in a fine block to deflect the ball over on the rebound.
After Miroslav Klose put Bayern Munich ahead against the Urawa Red Diamonds, Lukas Podolski extended the lead with a fine finish after a swift counter-attack. Podolski added the third just before the break, but Urawa managed to pull a goal back through Umesaki on the restart. Podolski then completed his hat-trick in the 63rd minute, Abe scoring a late consolation for the hosts.
Carlos Puyol poked home the first just before the half-hour and Jeffren Suarez added the second two minutes after the break. Pazzini pulled one back for the Viola but Bojan Krkic bagged the third minutes later.
After a goalless first half (highlights here), Stuttgart carved Arsenal open straight through the middle as Turkish legend Basturk turned and struck low and hard for the opener. Arsenal weren’t behind for long, Bendtner worked his way in from the right hand side, played a lovely pass forward to Carlos Vela, and the young Mexican controlled the ball on his thigh before firing high in the net. Moments later it was Vela who was the provider, with Bendtner staying strong to take the ball in the box and fire past Jens Lehmann. The Gunners turnaround was completed with a fine third created by Gael Clichy, who bustled down the left hand side before crossing to Jack Wilshere who controlled and hit a low hard shot inside the near post.

A very youthful Arsenal team took on Burgenland XI, a side made up of an assortment of Austrian players, and the Gunners got off the mark within the first minute. Traore burst down the left, crossed into Jack Wilshere, and his scuffed shot somehow went in. Bendtner scored a quick-fire brace, Carlos Vela then got in on the act, before Bendtner completed his hat-tick in the demolition. Vela added another, Bendtner got his fourth, making it 7-0 to Arsenal before the break. (First half highlights here.) Soon after the restart Vela claimed his hat-trick, Wilshere added another from the spot, and sub-Walcott also got in on the act. Unbelievably, Burgenland then pulled two goals back to restore a little pride.
