29/06/2008: Tyson Gay 100 m Unofficial World Record (Eugene - Athletics)

Scritto da: admin, il 30 June 2008, 5:07 pm

World champion Tyson Gay ran the fastest 100 metres of all-time to win the American Olympic trials, a wind-assisted 9.68 seconds. The victory put Gay into his first U.S. Olympic team but the wind speed of 4.1 metres per second deprived the 25-year-old of a world record. Only marks set with assisting winds of 2.0 metres per second or less can be considered for record purposes.

29/06/2008: Lenox Industrial Tools 301 (Loudon - Nascar)

Scritto da: admin, il 30 June 2008, 12:16 pm

Kurt Busch had strategy and luck on his side. Tony Stewart had neither.

That’s how Busch wound up ending his 29-race winless string Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the rain-shortened Lenox Industrial Tools 301, while the frustrated Stewart simply added another disheartening loss to his own winless string that has reached 31 races.

A first-half goal by Fernando Torres gave Spain their first major trophy in 44 years after a 1-0 Euro 2008 final win over Germany. The victory at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria, rounded off a superb tournament for the Spanish, for whom it was a second European triumph in addition to their 1964 win.

29/06/2008: GP San Marino (Misano - SBK Superbike 2008)

Scritto da: admin, il 29 June 2008, 10:52 pm

Max Neukirchner moved into contention at the sharp end of the World Superbike standings after claiming victory in race one at Misano. The Alstare Suzuki rider is up to second place in the riders’ standings behind long-time leader Troy Bayliss after his second win of the season was followed by a seventh place in race two, which was won by Sterilgarda Ducati’s Ruben Xaus. Ducati Xerox ace Bayliss came home in third in both races to ensure his lead at the top remains a healthy one, with the Australian on 259 points, 49 clear of Neukirchner.

28/06/2008: Suntrust Indy Challenge (Richmond - Indycar)

Scritto da: admin, il 29 June 2008, 9:04 pm

Fifty laps were added to the SunTrust Indy Challenge this year, and it seemed every one of them was run behind the pace car. The IndyCar Series’ streak of generally clean oval races in 2008 came to a resounding end Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway. There were nine caution periods totaling 102 laps, more than one-third of the expanded 300-lap total, and only 13 of the 26 starters were running at the finish.

Ironically, the driver who has endured more bad luck than anyone else in the series this year managed to steer clear of misfortune on a night when carnage ruled. Tony Kanaan won his first race of the season, leading 166 laps and crossing the line for the final time with a comfortable 4.77-second margin over runner-up Helio Castroneves.

A third-place finish served as damage control for championship leader Scott Dixon on a weekend when the New Zealander was not the ultimate pacesetter. Dixon gained a position on the last lap when his Ganassi Racing teammate Dan Wheldon apparently ran out of fuel; his championship lead now stands at 43 points ahead of Castroneves and 52 points ahead of Wheldon.

28/06/2008: GP Holland (Assen - Moto GP)

Scritto da: admin, il 29 June 2008, 1:14 am

Reigning MotoGP champion Casey Stoner claimed his second win in six days with victory at the Dutch TT in Assen as James Toseland recovered from last week’s debacle to finish ninth. After topping the podium at Donington last week, Australian Stoner claimed his third win of the season in Holland to cut the gap at the top of the championship standings from 45 to 29 points. The Ducati Marlboro rider finished ahead of Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa, who moved to the top of the standings over Valentino Rossi after the Italian finished the day in 11th place due to a crash in the opening lap. Pedrosa got off to a storming start from second on the grid when he beat Stoner into the first bend.

Derrick Rose is going home, and a record crowd of freshmen are following him to the NBA. The Chicago Bulls selected Rose, who grew up on the city’s South Side, with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft Thursday night, choosing the Memphis guard over Kansas State forward Michael Beasley. With Beasley going second to Miami and Minnesota picking O.J. Mayo at No. 3, college freshmen made up the first three picks for the first time in draft history. New York Knicks followed at No. 6 with Italian forward Danilo Gallinari, whose father played with new coach Mike D’Antoni overseas.
