Arsenal took the lead at Sunderland in remarkable circumstances. Cesc Fabregas closed down Anton Ferdinand and when the defender smashed the ball at the Spaniard it looped fully 40 yards into the Black Cats’ net. The Gunners should have been 2-up 15 minutes from time when they won a spot kick but a dreadful effort from Tomas Rosicky saw the ball ballooned over the bar. Sunderland may the North Londoners pay in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Gyan got the ball stuck under his feet in a melee in the box, Clichy added to his dwindling reputation by slicing a terrible clearance about two feet in front of him and Darren Bent pounced from six yards.
