When the game did get started, Mikel Arteta went close with a free-kick. Just after the half hour Arsenal thought they should have had a penalty for a foul on Robin van Persie. Minutes later, Sunderland took the lead, thanks to a fine low strike from Kieran Richardson. With 13 minutes to go it was all over and Arsenal were staring at another major defeat and a seventh season without a trophy as a lightning Sunderland break ended with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put through his own net on the goal line.
