Haifa got off to the worst possible start when Jurica Buljat tuned a cross into his own net after seven minutes. Six minutes from time the Israelis were finished off after losing possession in the Schalke half; the Germans sprung a quick attack and Ciprian Marica made it 2-nil. Haifa were dead and buried when Andreas Wiegel notched a third in injury time.
