Argentina started slowly and could have fallen behind in the third minute when the hosts were award a penalty after Angel Di María had fouled Jefferson Farfan in the box, but Sergio Romero saved Claudio Pizarro’s spot kick to keep the scores level. Peru took a deserved lead 19 minutes later when defender Carlos Zambrano slotted home Farfan’s low cross from the right. As halftime approached, Argentina equalised with their first meaningful attack of the match in the 38th minute, Gonzola Higuain adding a superb finish to Ezequiel Lavezzi’s cross to register his sixth goal of the qualifiers.
