Russia started brightly against Germany in their crunch match, Vladimir Bystrov failing to score after a delightful through-ball by Ashavin. And Russia were made to pay for their missed chances as Miroslav Klose slid home a Ozil cross past reported Manchester United target Igor Akinfeev ten minutes from the break. The Russian tried valiantly to equalise after the break, and in the final stages Bystrov had a strong penalty appeal turned down before Ballack and Arshavin had a coming together in the German box.
