The Croatians got off to a lightning start against the Irish as Mario Mandzukic scored a soft 13-yard header in just the third minute. The Irish equalised in the 18th minute when a McGeady free-kick was headed home at the back stick by Sean St Ledger. Minutes before the break Nikica Jelavic fired Croatia back in front after Ward shanked the ball into the Everton forward’s path. Ireland looked dead and buried minutes after the restart as Shay Given scored an unfortunate own goal after Mario Mandzukic’s header hit the post. The luck of the Irish was nowhere to be seen as Robbie Keane was denied a penalty just past the hour.
