After spending much of the half defending, Michael Owen was at his predatory best to head home a Nani cross just before the break. Eleven minutes into the second half that man Edin Dzeko headed home Wolfsburg’s equaliser. With seven minutes remaining substitute Gabriel Obertan produced some excellent trickery down the left to set up Michael Owen to give United the lead again. Owen capped a memorable individual performance with the best goal of the night courtesy of another Obertan pass, as he raced clear before clipping a brilliant finish beyond Wolfsburg’s crestfallen goalkeeper.
