Aston Villa took the lead after a quick break down the left, with Chris Herd timing his run into the box to finish into the top corner. Livepool could and should have drawn level before half-time, but Dirk Kuyt blazed over the bar when it was harder to miss. Luis Suarez bundled a header over the line after Villa had failed to clear from a Liverpool corner.
