A brilliant first half display by Fiorentina at Siena blew the hosts away in the opening 45 minutes, Per Kroldrup headed in a Vargas corner after seven minutes, Mario Alberto Santana converted the second from a free-kick after 28 minutes and Alberto Gilardino chalked up a third 10 minutes from the break. The visitors continued to torment Siena in the second half. Gilardino netted his second of the match in the 66th minute and then 11 minutes from time Adrian Mutu scored Fiorentina’s fifth of the afternoon. However, the hosts earned themselves a consolation goal when Massimo Maccarone converted a penalty in the 84th minute.

Grande generosità da parte della squadra di Malesani, che però mostra enormi lacune in difesa. Così la Fiorentina va in gol già al 5′ con Kroldrup. Dubbi di fuorigioco sul raddoppio di Santana, ma poi i due centri di Gilardino chiudono la partita. Torna a segnare anche il romeno Mutu, mentre nel finale arriva la rete della bandiera col rigore di Maccarone.
