Norway’s Thor Hushovd won the men’s road race at the 77th UCI Road World Championships in Geelong. He won a bunch sprint from Denmark’s Matti Breschel with Australia’s Allan Davis taking bronze. Italy’s Filippo Pozzato, who won the 130km warm-up at the World Cycling Classic at Buninyong near Melbourne last Sunday, was edged out of the medals with three-time champion Oscar Freire of Spain in sixth. The 262.7 km course involved an 88 kilometre transfer from Melbourne before 11 laps of a 15.9 km circuit in Geelong featuring two arduous climbs.
