Jorge Lorenzo blew the MotoGP championship open with a stunning ride to win the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello. Australia's Casey Stoner had looked set to win the race from pole position after carving out a two-second lead, but with his tyres apparently deteriorating half-way through the race his pace dropped to allow the Spaniard back in. Defending MotoGP champion Lorenzo reeled in the current year's championship leader Stoner before overtaking him on the 18th lap of 23 then cruising to an excellent win. Stoner's lack of pace continued to cost him, with his Repsol Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso overtaking him in the closing stages to snatch second place.
