Giorgia Bronzini won the women’s road world championship in the port city of Geelong as Britain’s Nicole Cooke missed out on a podium spot in a frantic sprint finish. The 27-year-old Bronzini edged out Netherlands’ Marianne Vos by a bike length after a furious four-way sprint up the final straight of the 127.2 km course to win the rainbow jersey. Emma Johansson of Sweden took bronze but appeared unhappy as she crossed the line after nearly crashing into Vos from behind during the closing stages of the sprint, with Britain’s 2008 Olympic and world champion Cooke forced to settle for fourth.
