St. Mary’s erupted in the 16th minute when Rickie Lambert scored with a backpost header from a Puncheon’s inswinging cross. The Red Devils levelled in the 22nd minute as Valencia picked out Robin van Persie at the backpost, the Dutchman chested the ball down and rifled a left-footer in the far corner. The Saints retook the lead 10 minutes in to the second half as Morgan Schneiderlin scored a backpost header from a Lambert cross. Southampton looked doomed when Jos Hooiveld clattered into Robin van Persie to give away a penalty, but van Persie proceeded to balls-up the spot-kick as Kelvin Davis saved his poor penanka penalty. In the 87th minute Rafael’s cross was met by Rio Ferdinand, who saw a header rebound off the post, but Robin van Persie was on hand to slam in the equaliser. As Fergie Time ticked over on Sir Alex’s 1000th game in charge of Manchester United, Nani swung in a corner which Robin van Persie headed home for one of the craziest comebacks in Premier League history. Robin van Persie walked off the Southampton pitch with the match ball.
