Reina was tested early on by a low Santi Cazorla shot, while at the other end Per Mertesacker was booked inside 5 minutes for tugging back Luis Suarez. Just after the half hour Arsenal scored their first goal of the season as Cazorla slipped in Lukas Podolski on the left and the German fired home his first Premier League goal. Raheem Sterling hit the outside of the post as the Reds looked for a leveller, while Olivier Giroud drew plenty of scorn after wasting an opportunity from Diaby’s fine set-up play. In the 68th minute Arsenal doubled their lead as Santi Cazorla worked a 1-2 with Podolski down the left and the Spaniard drove a low shot through Reina and into the near post.
