With the last kick of the first half, in which Uruguay had started the brighter but the Black Stars dominated the latter stages, Sulley Muntari scored a long ranger with great power and swerve from 35 yards out to beat the culpable Fernando Muslera and put Ghana 1-up. Ten minutes into the second half Uruguay talisman Diego Forlan equalised from a free kick that also dipped and moved in the air to leave Richard Kingson groping thin air. There was insanity in the final minute of extra-time. Muslera failed to claim and a shot from youngster Appiah was blocked on the line by Luis Suarez, a header back in from Adiyah saw the Ajax striker block on the line with his hand and was duly sent off. Asamoah Gyan stepped up and blasted the penalty against the crossbar to send the match from a penalty to penalties.
