Marco Marchionni picked up an overhit cross from Vargas just outside Catania’s box and the winger cut inside and flash home a beauty to give Fiorentina a 5th minute lead. The Viola had Dario Dainelli sent off just before the interval, and minutes after the restart Catania were level as Giuseppe Mascara rifled an unstoppable half-volley into the far top corner from 25-yards out. The Sicilians then had Ciro Capuano dismissed to even out the numbers, and the Viola quickly regained their advantage as Marco Marchionni scored his second of the game. Antonio Gilardino added a third at the death following yet another left wing cross from the excellent Vargas.

Partita bella e combattuta nonostante gli errori arbitrali. Fiorentina subito in gol con l’ex juventino, poi un probabile rigore negato, la discussa espulsione di Dainelli, le difficoltà e il pari catanese a inizio ripresa. Quindi il rosso a Capuano ristabilisce la superiorità numerica: raddoppia ancora Marchionni, chiude Gilardino.
